Tips for Eating Healthy on Vacation

With Spring Break quickly approaching, vacationers young and old are feeling the pressure to get bikini ready. Hitting the gym, skipping the cake, and filling up on healthy lean proteins and complex carbs help the body to get vacation ready. Often though, the healthy choices and exercise disappear once the getaway begins. While food is an important part of enjoying your vacation, eating the right foods can help to maintain high energy to enjoy it to the fullest. Our friends at the Sayre Mansion, a bed and breakfast in Bethlehem, PA, shared these tips for staying healthy without sacrificing taste.

1. Snack healthy by bringing nuts, dried fruit, or whatever your favorite healthy snack is. You’ll save calories and money by skipping the greasy chips from an airport vending machine.

2. Bring a reusable plastic water bottle to stay hydrated as you explore your destination. Skip soda and other high-calorie beverages, especially when you’re doing a lot of physical activity. But don’t guilt yourself if you choose to indulge in a beachside cocktail, either! Everything in moderation.

3. Do your research to see if the town you’re staying at has a farmers market. Many towns in Europe and other destinations have open air markets that are as much about the experience as they are about the delicious, fresh produce.

4. Don’t waste your meals on fast food choices that are the same as you would get back at home. Sample the local cuisine to get fresher options that become memories in and of themselves.

5. Watch out for huge portion sizes at sit down restaurants. Try to plan your meals so that you aren’t rushed, and take the time to enjoy your food. Eating slower will allow your body to recognize when it’s no longer hungry and stop eating. Plus, it’s a great way to bond with your travel companions.

6. As much as possible, incorporate walking into your sightseeing. Hopping on the bus may be faster, but you’ll miss out on many exciting things on the way, as well as the chance to burn some calories!

7. Load up on a healthy breakfast to maintain your energy throughout the day. Staying at a bed and breakfast is an easy way to get a fresh and delicious local meal. Check out the delicious fare at the Sayre Mansion’s daily breakfast, for example!

No matter what, make sure that you aren’t obsessing over food to the point that your vacation becomes less enjoyable. Your trip is a time to indulge and sample new and exotic foods, and there’s no need to deprive yourself of that. Just make healthy choices and sample in moderation.
