5 Foods to Fight Fall Allergies

Forover 35  million Americans, the transition into autumn means a lot more than just apple cider and snuggling into sweatshirts. Instead of enjoying the beautiful season, we celebrate the passing of Labor Day with our eyes constantly watering and a box of tissues close at hand. Common fall allergens include many substances that are hard to avoid altogether, like ragweed pollen and molds. With the many outdoor activities in the fall,  many are forced to choose between staying inside and missing out on the fun or a host of unpleasant allergy symptoms. Luckily, there are natural ways to combat the effects of fall allergies.

Sugar and You: What You Are Really Consuming

The United States has the highest obesity rate in the world; about 72.5 million American adults are classified as obese. The epidemic is caused by over consumption and not enough exercise and is becoming a serious issue, with some of the leading causes of death in the US being a direct result of obesity (i.e. heart disease, stroke, and diabetes). Because of this, Americans are becoming more conscious of what and how much they are consuming. Calories and sugar are two important factors to consider when monitoring food intake. Let’s take a look at how much Americans are consuming as opposed to how much they should be consuming.

The recommended caloric intake for males that are moderately active is 2,000 to 2,400 per day and 1,800 to 2,200 for women. But with the escalating obesity rates, it is clear that Americans are consuming well over this amount. It is estimated that the average American will take in about 2,700 calories per day. Looking at this statistic, it’s no wonder the US is rapidly putting on the pounds.  By consuming an extra 500 calories per day, a person will gain a pound in just one week!

Veterinary Medicine: Animals Need Supplements Too!

Typically, when one thinks of what types of animals veterinarians treat, one’s mind goes to dogs and cats, also known as canine and feline medical specializations. Many natural health supplements are can be used in canine patients. However, there exists an extended list of other types of animals veterinarians can specialize in treating. Some are very large, some much smaller and some are very exotic.

One type of veterinary discipline, which focuses on large animals, is bovinae medicine. This biological subfamily consists of a group of 10 large animals, which include bison, cattle, water buffalo, American buffalo, antelopes and yak. Although these animals can be very different in size and characteristics, they all fall under this category despite the obscurity of the relationships between each animal. Although they are similar to horses in some ways, it is not suggested that they be given horse supplements. They are generally classified by characteristics including cloven hoofs and horns, which are often noted in males but sometimes less noticeably in females as well.
