Forover 35  million Americans, the transition into autumn means a lot more than just apple cider and snuggling into sweatshirts. Instead of enjoying the beautiful season, we celebrate the passing of Labor Day with our eyes constantly watering and a box of tissues close at hand. Common fall allergens include many substances that are hard to avoid altogether, like ragweed pollen and molds. With the many outdoor activities in the fall,  many are forced to choose between staying inside and missing out on the fun or a host of unpleasant allergy symptoms. Luckily, there are natural ways to combat the effects of fall allergies.

Broccoli

Green veggies are high in allergy-fighting vitamin C. Broccoli packs an extra punch because it is a member of the crucifer family, which has sinus-clearing powers.

Onions and Garlic

They might not do much for your breath, but these two are both packed with quercetin, which functions as a natural antihistamine. For those with severe allergies, a garlic supplement may be a good option, as absorbing enough to alleviate allergies through consumption alone can be difficult.

Pumpkins

To help get into the fall spirit and alleviate allergies at the same time, try incorporating more pumpkin into your diet. The carotenoids in pumpkin help your body to get the allergy fighting form of vitamin C that it needs. Move beyond pies to pumpkins soups and stews to keep you warm on a cool fall day.

Kale

Though not necessarily the most popular vegetable, Kale packs the one-two punch of being a member of the crucifer family and being packed with carotenoids that delivers a fatal blow to fall allergies.

Celery

Celery combines vitamin C with equally important anti-inflammatory compounds that not only help to fight allergies, but also help alleviate high blood pressure and chronic pain. Celery is also incredibly versatile, as it is one of few vegetables that doesn’t lose its healthy components when cooked.
